5 Warning Signs Your Computer Needs Professional Repair

Most computer problems give warning signs before they become serious — the trick is knowing which signs to take seriously, and which ones you can safely ignore for now.

1. It's Noticeably Slower Than Before

A computer that used to open programs instantly but now takes forever is usually telling you something. This can be caused by a nearly-full hard drive, too many background programs starting up automatically, malware, or — if the machine is a few years old — a failing hard drive that's starting to struggle. A quick diagnostic can usually tell within minutes whether it's a simple cleanup job or something more serious.

2. It Overheats or the Fan Runs Constantly

If your laptop feels hot to the touch, shuts down unexpectedly, or the fan runs loudly all the time — even when you're not doing anything demanding — dust buildup inside the vents is often the culprit, along with dried-out thermal paste on older machines. Left unaddressed, overheating can permanently damage internal components, so this one is worth acting on sooner rather than later.

3. Strange Noises

A clicking, grinding or repeated whirring noise — especially from a desktop tower or an older laptop — is one of the more urgent warning signs on this list. It often points to a hard drive that's beginning to fail mechanically. If you hear this, back up your important files immediately, even before bringing it in for repair.

4. Frequent Freezing, Crashing or Blue/Black Screens

Occasional hiccups happen to every computer, but if yours is freezing regularly, restarting on its own, or showing error screens, this can point to a software conflict, corrupted system files, failing memory (RAM), or malware. Random crashes are also one of the more common reasons people lose important documents, so this is worth diagnosing early.

5. Pop-ups, Unexpected Toolbars or Unusually High Data/Battery Use

If you're seeing pop-up ads even when your browser is closed, new toolbars or programs you didn't install, or your battery draining much faster than usual, these are classic signs of malware or adware running in the background — often installed unknowingly through a downloaded file or website. This is also a data-privacy concern, not just a performance one.

When to Repair vs. When to Replace

As a general rule: if the repair cost is under roughly a third of what a comparable replacement machine would cost, and the computer is meeting your other needs well, repair usually makes sense. If it's an older machine already showing several of the signs above at once, it may be more cost-effective to consider a replacement — we're happy to give you an honest opinion either way when you bring it in.
